First Empires and Influences
The earliest recorder empire in the region was the Srivijaya Empire. A Buddhism maritime kingdom that held power in an area encompassing the Strait of Malacca and both coast of the Malay Peninsula, the East coast of Sumatra and western Java, from the 7 CE until 14 Ce. They controlled this major trade routed frequented by Asian and Middle Eastern merchants. AndBuddhism as a common bond with China made them big partners traders.
I have to mention that most of South East Asia regions had a big influence from Indian religion and culture. Languages, art, architecture from India were there from the 8 CE until before of the European arrival.
At the same time, there were several different Empires in the Indonesian archipelago, each one with some differences, butstill with very similar backgrounds.
We can mention The Sailendra Empire, that where place at the same time of Srivijaya. But they ruled in central Java. They were also a Buddhist society and are best known for the magnificent Boroduru Monument.
During roughly the same time that the Sailendra, in the middle of the 8 CE, were in Central Java a Hindu kingdom called the Sanjaya. And as it grew instrength, conflict erupted between them. As they saw this fantastic Buddhist building, the Boroduru, they decided to rise up a splendid Hindu complex, the Parambanan. These two kingdoms where only a few miles away, so they also got a lot of trouble during their existence because of their differences and competition of ruling.
With the past of the time the Srivijaya Empire was dominant, and theothers started to spread and move to other territories, finally declining in the tenth CE.
But between the tenths and the third teen century, a prominent Javanese king of the Sanjaya line was Airlangga. He got married with a Javanese princess and became ruler of the Javanese empire. Airlangga is remembered in today's Indonesia as a model of religious tolerance. Under Airlangga, the ports of thenorth coast of Java, especially Surabaya and Tuban, became large important trading centres for the first time. This was partly due to the weakening of Srivijaya, which made trading there unsafe.
After his death, there were several wars with the Chinese that took them to the end of their days as a kingdom.
Golden Age: Majapahit Empire
The Majapahit Empire, a Hindu kingdom based in East Java, enjoyed unrivalled success from 1292 to 1389, boasting at least partial control over a vast area covering Java, Bali, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, Lombok and Timor. This was the first time the major islands of the Indonesian archipelago had been united under one command. As well as economic prosperity, the Majapahit Empire also saw the first flowering of Indonesian culture, in particular certain courtlytraditions still extant. However, the arrival of Islam on Java and a massive revolt in the north of the island eventually left the empire weak and in disarray, although it managed to survive for over a hundred years longer on its new home in Bali.
Spread of Islam in Indonesia (1200 - 1600)
Islam was brought into Indonesia by traders from Gujarat, India during the eleventh century, althoughMuslims had visited the archipelago early in the Muslim era. By the end of the 16th century, Islam, through conversion, had surpassed Hinduism and Buddhism as the dominant religion of the peoples of Java and Sumatra. The spread of Islam was driven by increasing trade links outside of the archipelago; in general, traders and the royalty of major kingdoms were the first to adopt the new religion.Dominant kingdoms included Mataram in Central Java, and the sultanates of Ternate and Tidore in the Maluku Islands to the east. By the end of the thirteenth century, Islam had been established in North Sumatra; by the fourteenth in northeast Malaya, Brunei, the southern Philippines and among some courtiers of East Java; and the fifteenth in Malacca and other areas of the Malay Peninsula.
