Organizational Challenges in the Public Sector


The Crime Victims Compensation Program is an interestingorganization because of the very nature of the service the program provides. Public service organizations typically address social issues plaguing the community and/or society. For the CVCP the targetpopulation is victims of crime. The program /serves people at their worst moment therefore the demands are high. The clients’ the program serves people who are usually in distress and reeling after beingthe victim of a horrible event. Aside from their administrative duties, the staff has to be emotionally empathetic to the needs of the victims. Therefore the staff has a difficult task at hand.Ultimately, management has to consider a lot of different factors with regards to the needs of the staff. Furthermore, it is crucial that those needs are met so that staff can perform well andultimately meet the needs of the client. Structure and clear expectations are important as well as incentives to motivate the staff.
Structure and organization are important in any workplace. The goalhas to be clear for the staff and resources have to be provided so that staff can work toward achieving the goals of the program, organization or business they are working for. The scientificmanagement style illustrated by Frederick Taylor provides an efficient model and structure for employees. Critics of the theory however assert that Taylorism” dehumanizes the employees and views them asinterchangeable. Frederick’s theory believes that employees will never go above and beyond the call of duty and have negative attitudes toward their jobs and employer therefore, the model that he proposeswill ensure that employees stay on track and do their job well. Although the text implies that this happens in for profit business, those same attitudes are also prevalent in the public sector....
