The souls of Black folk chapter 4 summary
In chapter 4, Du Bois tells the story of his time teaching in a town at Tennessee. He says he started“hunting” for schools, asking if the school needed a teacher. He ends at a little school that needed a teacher. After spending the night at the house of the familyof a girl named Josie, he goes to the commissioner’s house with a young white man who Du bois describes as “pleasant”. He is treated well at the house and he’sasked to stay for dinner but he still notices the inequality of treatment as he says: “but even then fell the awful shadow of the Veil, for they ate first, then I -- alone.” After that, Du bois starts describing his days at the school. He describes the boys and girls that went to school and their living conditions. He also talks about the times spent with them and their families. After his time ended there, 10 years have passed and he decides to go back to the town andvisit everyone there. He’s caught up by the news that Josie was dead. He then finds out that many of the people he got to know there were dead, some in jail, somestill in poverty, others were slowly thriving but in debt too. He ends the chapter by saying: “and behind me lay hill and dale, and Life and Death. How shallman measure Progress there where the dark-faced Josie lies? How many hearts full of sorrow shall balance a bushel of wheat? How hard a thing is life to the lowly, and yet how human and real! And all this life and love and strife and failure, -- is it the twilight of nightfall or the flush of some faint-dawning day?”.
