Before the modern age and the spread of knowledge throughout the world, written examples of new mathematical developments came to light only in a few scenarios. The most ancientmathematical texts available are the clay tablet Plimpton 322 (c. 1900 BC.), The Moscow papyrus (c. 1850 BC.), The Rind papyrus (c. 1650 BC.) Shulba Vedic texts and Sutras (c. 800 a.). In all thesetexts mention the Pythagorean theorem, which seems to be the most ancient and widespread mathematical development after basic arithmetic and geometry.
Traditionally it has been considered thatmathematics as a science emerged in order to do calculations in commerce, to measure the Earth and predict astronomical events. These three needs can be related in some way to the broad subdivision ofmathematics into the study of structure, space and change. [Citation needed]
Egyptian and Babylonian mathematics were largely developed by Greek mathematics, which refined the methods (especially theintroduction of mathematical rigor in proofs) and expanded the affairs of this science.1 Mathematics in medieval Islam, in turn , developed and extended mathematics known to these ancient civilizations. Many Greek and Arabic texts on mathematics were translated into Latin, which led to further development of mathematics in the Middle Ages. From the Italian Renaissance in the sixteenth century, newmathematical developments, interacting with contemporary scientific discoveries have been growing exponentially until today.
prehistory
Long before the first written records, there are drawings showingsome knowledge of basic math and measurement of time based on the stars. For example, paleontologists have discovered ocher rocks in a cave in South Africa about 70,000 years old, which are adorned...
