Introducción A La Biología

Lesson 1. Introduction to Biology.
Biology is the study of living things. It encompasses the cellular basis of living things, the energy metabolism that underlies the activities of life, and thegenetic bases for inheritance in organisms. Biology also includes the study of evolutionary relationships among organisms and the diversity of life on earth. It considers the biology of microorganisms,plants, and animals, and it brings together the structural and functional relationships that underlie their day-to-day activities (Cliffsnotes.com, 2010).

The scientific knowledge developed bybiology requires the support of other science areas such as:
* Chemistry. The study of matter and the changes it undergoes.
It has allowed the discovery and study of the structure of themolecules, compounds and elements which compose the living organisms. (Oñate, 2010)
* Physics. The study of the properties and interaction of matter.
It has allowed the comprehension of crucialphysical phenomena of living beings, such as the energy transfer of nervous stimuli, the energy processes of all living beings. (Oñate, 2010)
* Mathematics. The study of the measurement, properties, andrelationships of quantities and sets, using numbers and symbols. (The free dictionary.com, 2010)
It has allowed the development of models which represent biological phenomena such as populationgrowth, the speed in which a disease spreads out, the amount of subjects representing a specific trait, etc... (Oñate, 2010)
* Geography. The study of the earth and its features and of thedistribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity (The free dictionary.com, 2010)
