Chapter 22

“Why are you telling me this now, dad?” his son asked him.
Gabe’s expression had changed completely while he was narrating the end of the story. Matty’s story was documented by Gabe’s dad, Leader, when he was only a child. His father always told him to remember, because that was his power. His father also told him Village would be selfish again, but he never told him it wasanother kind of selfishness. Gabe never pay attention to his father’s warnings, not even when he got older, but now he was starting to see what his father meant.

“Your grandfather used to tell me Matty’s story every night before I go to sleep, because he wanted me to know Matty saved Village. He didn’t want me to forget about it, because he didn’t want me to be selfish” said Gabe, closing the bookand putting it on the night stand. Gabe wasn’t sure if his son would understand his father and him intentions on telling him Matty’s story, and to make himself clear he had to explain, so he sighed and continued. “Village is becoming selfish, again. Daniel, I want you to understand why it is so important that no one in Village should be selfish. They once did, like you have heard in the story, andthey weren’t kind or loyal. If Village becomes selfish we won’t be able to live our lives like we do now.” Gabe wasn’t sure if telling Daniel was the best idea, but he had to. He had been too afraid of telling Daniel, but he knew that moment was getting closer and closer everyday and he wanted his son to be prepare. “Do you understand me?” he asked Daniel.
“I-I think I do” Daniel responded, andwhen his father left the room he instantly fell asleep thinking of how Village could change.

Daniel seemed like he wasn’t sure of what he was telling him, thought Gabe. He didn’t seem to understand. But, how could he? He was only ten years old; he had only started feeling the need to experiment with different kind of “teenage things”. Gabe knew Daniel could save Village. His father and mother,Kira, had told him so. But, Gabe didn’t want Daniel to die or suffer. Daniel was only a child, and had only started to live. But Daniel’s life was written in Leader’s mind.
Leader never told Gabe if Daniel would have to sacrifice himself to save Village. Gabe didn’t like to think of it, because for some reason his dad didn’t tell him. But right now, on his bed, Gabe couldn’t stop thinking aboutit. He wasn’t sure if it was selfish or not to think of leaving Village and forget about what his dad told him, even though that couldn’t be possible. Daniel born to save Village not to run away, and even though that sounded terrible it was what was supposed to happen since the beginning.

It was the night of the Trade Mark, again for the third time in the month. Gabe took his son tonight, because he wanted to show him what he was talking about.
Daniel was a smart kid. He was starting to see things no one could, besides Gabe. But he never told his dad, because he was scared. He didn’t even know how to call it, but he definitely knew how to describe it. He had written a few letters where he described it, just that he wouldn’t forget; he had learned that from his grandfather.
Danielliked to travel the Forest, every now and then. When he was little his grandfather always took him on trips to different communities, because he told him he needed to learn how to travel. Daniel never asked him why, though. He never thought it would be necessary. Besides, he would only travel the Forest for fun, never for a job. Even though, he wanted to be a Messenger.
Daniel had never been tothe Trade Mark before, he didn’t feel good about the decision his dad had made. When, his grandfather was still alive, he told him never to go there alone. He said it could be dangerous, and Daniel created some kind of insecurity against it. He didn’t like to go out the nights of the Trade Mark because he didn’t like to socialize with the people that went; he was also scared of them. But...
