V. C. 1. Child names common shapes.

Objective Content: The student will count the number of sides for shapes, such as square, rectangle, triangle, and rhombus and categorize the shapes based on number of sides.

Key Academic Vocabulary to be taught: lados (sides), pentagon (pentagon)

Materials and/or Technology Resources:
* 15 foam squares, 15foam circles, 15 foam rectangles, 15 foam rhombus, 15 foam triangles,15 foam ovals, 15 pentagons, 15 glue bottles, crayons, 15 scissors, 15 sheet with seven shapes to cut out, and 15 sheets with the chart in which the students will categorize shapes based on number of sides.
* Distribution strategy: The materials foam manipulatives will be passed out to the students in the beginning of thelesson. The crayons are already going to be in the children’s’ tables. The scissors will be passed out to each table by the teacher. No child needs to be walking around with scissors in their hands. The students will get their own glue bottle after they color and cut their shapes and are ready to glue.
* Collection strategy: Ask the students to group the manipulatives by shape and pick them upfrom their tables. Students will put the crayons they used in the basket they belong when asked to clean up. The teacher will pick up the scissors herself to guarantee the students’ safety. The students will put the glue bottles up when finished with it.

Anticipatory Set: The lesson will be introduced by reviewing the shapes they already know. Then the concept of shapes having sides will beintroduced.
* Prerequisite learning and/or key concepts: Students should already know what a square, circle, rectangle and rhombus are. They student should have prior knowledge on counting from zero to five.

* Motivation/engagement: The teacher will begin by showing the students pictures of the figures they already know and the students will be expected to name each figure. Then shewill ask them to show her a square, rectangle etc. and the student will raise the correct foam shape. After the shapes are reviewed the teacher will introduce the new topic.

Procedures:
* The first step is to review the shapes with the students. Show them the poster board with the shapes and make sure they all remember what each shape is called.
* Pass out the foam shapes (manipulatives)to the students. Ask them to show you a rhombus, circle, triangle, etc.
* Introduce the topic- Explain that some shapes have straight lines on the outside that are called sides. Put the triangle on the white board and ask then to count the sides with you. This will help them visualize the concept.
* Tell the students to pick up the triangle and to count the sides with you as they tracethe edges of the triangle. Make sure they all count with you. Ask, “How many sides does a triangle have?” This will confirm if they understood. Do this with the other four shapes that have sides.
* Explain that some shapes don’t have any sides like circles and ovals. The teacher will put the two shapes on the white board so the students can see that circles and ovals have no sides.
* Askall the students to show you a shape with 3, 5, 4, 1, 2, and 0 sides. Guide the students to the idea that there are no shapes with 1 or 2 sides. Ex: “Show me a shape with 2 sides (let them think about it for a couple minutes). Wait, are there shapes with 2 sides? Oh, I don’t think there are. Do the same with 1.
* Introduce the activity to the students. Model what it is they are expected todo. Show the students the paper with the shapes and explain that they are to color the shapes and then cut them out on the dotted line make sure they know not to cut the shape out. Tell them to color the shapes first and then cut. Pass out the paper with the seven shapes. Tell them to disregard the last empty square with no shape.
* Make sure to pass out the scissors. The students’ safety is...
