1. What facts are presented in the passage? What opinions are presented?
Saying that the Kushites life was wretched is an opinion and the rest of the passage is made of facts.
Passage:
“The mode of life of the [Kushites] is wretched; they are for the most part naked, and wander from place to place with their ocks. Their ocks and herds are small insize . . . They [the Kushites] live on millet and barley . . . Some feed even upon grass, the tender twigs of trees, the lotus, or the roots of reeds…”

2. The author was a famous Greek historian. Why might he be biased regarding the Kushites?
He may have been biased because Greeks and Kushites were not friendly between themselves because they were two different cultures.

3. Whatwords or phrases indicate that the author is biased? Do those words indicate a favorable or unfavorable bias?
The word and phrase that indicates he is biased, is that “The mode of life of the Kushites is wretched…”

In Nubia, lands were really fertile and the Nile River was just beside so it flooded the land and it watered their plants.

They changed becausethey were both becoming powerful civilizations and they were afraid of each other attacking them.

c. Predict: If an archaeologist found an artifact near the Fourth Cataract, why might he or she have difficulty deciding how to display it in a museum?
He would have trouble because it would be difficult to know if the artifact is Kushite, Egyptian or from any civilization that were near theNile River.

A. Identify Who was Queen Shanakhdakheto? Why don’t we know more about her?
Queen Shanakhdakheto was the first woman to rule an entire empire. We don’t know more about her because historians do not understand much of Kushite writing.

B. Compare and Contrast What are some features that Kushite and Egyptian cultures had in common? How were theydifferent?
They were both civilizations that depended on the Nile River and they also built pyramids as tombs. They believed in many gods.
Kushite women influenced in their culture as much as men did, unlike Egyptians, and they had very different gods like Kushite god Apedemek, the lion headed god, while Egyptians had Ra, an eagle headed god.
C. Evaluate What do you think was the most importantcause of Kush’s decline? Why?
When their economy failed, they couldn’t afford having an army and establishing a government. Their trade decreased and made their rival, Aksum, power increase.
