What is Competency Based Education?
Competency-based education is fundamentally different from traditional higher education as we know it, rather than credentialing a student based upon ‘seat time’orcredit hour [duration of course] and assessment, the student is credentialed based upon demonstration of the knowledge and/or skills required to meet an established skill set (competency).Constructivism
 The term refers to the idea that learners construct knowledge for themselves---each learner individually (and socially) constructs meaning---as he or she learns. 3 Constructing meaning islearning; there is no other kind. The dramatic consequences of this view are twofold;
1) we have to focus on the learner in thinking about learning (not on the subject/lesson to be taught):
2) There isno knowledge independent of the meaning attributed to experience (constructed) by the learner, or community of learners.

Warm-up:

Teacher writes 'Juicy Baek' on the board and asks the class ifthey have heard of Juicy Baek. When the class says no, the teacher explains that Juicy Baek is a new drug that many young people are using. Juicy Baek is in fact alcohol, BUT DON'T TELL YOUR STUDENTSTHAT! Tell the class that there is a big debate in North America about whether or not to make Juicy Baek illegal. Because Juicy Baek is so new, there are no laws yet. The purpose of the class is todecide how Juicy Baek should be regulated if at all. But first, the students must gather facts and views from different constituencies of society. As a red herring, I tell the class that Juicy Baek isusually injected with a needle. This throws them off track that Juicy Baek is in fact alcohol. Plus, the fact that it's a needle tends to make even the biggest drinkers turn against Juicy Baek.

Each member of the class will be given a role-card. They represent the different constituencies of society: the police, sociologists, medical doctors, victims, family members,...
