The French Revolution
The French Revolution is one of the greatest events that have happend in the Modern Wertern Civilized World. It symbolizes the triumph of the French society over the corruptoligarchy. It chanced the way the French government, society and perhaps many other contries worked. However there is a question. The French Revolution: was it worth it?
In order to understandwhether the French revolution was worth or not, we have to have an understanding of the French society before July 14th, 1789. Thus, we can determine if the outcome was good enough in order to change theentire country in a better place to live.
Prior the start of the French Revolution, French society was divided into three estates or classes: the clergy (First estate), the nobility (Secondestate) and the remainder of the people (Third estate). Most members of the third estate were peasants working in the country side. In addition they had to pay a lot of taxes, even though they belonged tothe low income families. Finally the third estate also included the bourgeoisie who were professionals such as lawyers, doctors and wealthy merchants. The first estate was wealthy and the tithe wasstill collected by the Church. They did not have to pay any kind of taxes. The second estate was wealthy as well. Members of the second estate were nobles who had position in the army and courts. Theywere land owners and did not have to pay taxes either.
France’s peasants lived under the worst conditions. Although industry was becoming a more important part of the nation’s economy, France wasstill largely dependent on the feudal system in which powerful feudal lords (seigneurs) owned profitable farmlands on which peasants lived and worked. Some peasants had managed to earn enough money fromtheir crops to purchase their own small plots of land, but the vast majority lived in poverty, completely under the thumbs of feudal lords.
The bourgeoisie began to protest unequal treatment....
