BIOLOGY MID_TERM REVIEW
Chapter 1List and discuss features of all living things * Composed of one or more cells * Is able to reproduce * Obtains and uses energy to ru n the process of life * Adapting (responding to the environment around them)List and discuss the steps of the scientific method 1. Observation- you observe what is happening 2. Hypothesis- you make a statement that youwill prove right or wrong 3. Prediction- what you think that will happen 4. Experiment- the process to get the answer 5. Conclusion- when you right all you have seen and if your hypothesis was proven right or wrongRecognize the control and experimental groups in a control  experimentDefine all bold faced termsChapter 1 Words 1. Biology- is the study of life 2. Cell- are highlyorganized, tiny structures with thin coverings called membranes 3. Reproduction- is the process in which organisms make more of their own kind from one generation to the next. 4. Metabolism- the sum of all chemical processes that occur in an organism 5. Homeostasis- the maintenance of stable internal conditions in spite of the changes in the external eviroment. 6. Gene- the basic unit of heredity7. Heredity- the passing of traits from parent to offspring 8. Mutation- a change in the DNA of a gene 9. Evolution- change in the inherited traits of species over generations 10. Species- is a group of genetically similar organisms that can produce fertile offspring 11. natural selection- process in which organisms with favorable genes are more likely to survive to be able to reproduce.12. Ecology- the branch of biology that studies the interactions of organisms with one nother and with the nonliving part of their environment. 13. Genome-is the complete genetic material contained in an individual 14. HIV- a virus that attacks and destroys the human immune system, is transmitted by contact with body fluids from an infected person (were AIDS COME FROM) 15. Cancer- is agrowth defect in cells, a breakdown of the mechanism that controls cell division (surplus of cells) 16. Cystic fibrosis- is a fatal disorder in which a thick, sticky mucus clogs passages in many of the bodys organs 17. gene therapy- the replacement of a defective gene with a normal version. 18. Observation- is the act of noting or perceiving objects or events using the senses 19. Hypothesis-is an explanation that might be true, a statement that that can be proven correct by observations 20. Prediction- is the expected outcome of a text, assuming your hypothesis is correct. 21. pH- is a relative measure of the hydrogen ion concentration within a solution. 22. Experiment- a planned procedure to test a hypothesus 23. Control group- is a group in an experiment that receives noexperimental treatment. 24. Independent variable- the factor that is changed in an experiment 25. Dependent variable- the variable that is measured in an experiment. 26. Theory- is a set of of related hypotheses that have been tested and confirmed many times by many scientist. List the usual temperatures (boiling, freezing, room, etc…) Boiling- 100’C Freesing- 0’C Room temp- 70 FChapter 2 Define all bold-faced terms 1. Atom- is the smallest unit of matter that cannot be broken down by chemical means. 2. Element- is a pure substance made of only one kind of atom. 3. Compound- is a substance made pf the joined atoms of two or more different elements. 4. Molecule- is a group of atoms held together by convalent bonds. 5. Ion- an atom or molecule that has gained orlost one or more electrons. 6. Cohesion- is an attraction between substances of the same kind. 7. Adhesion- is an attraction between different substances. 8. Solution- is a mixture in which one or more substances are evenly distributed in another substance. 9. Acids- compounds that form hydrogen ions when dissolved in water 10. Bases- compounds that reduce the concentration of...
