Native American and European settlement
It is commonly thought that the indigenous peoples of the U.S. mainland,including Alaska Natives, migrated from Asia between 12,000 and 40,000 years atrás.16 Some, such as the Mississippian culture, developed advanced agriculture, architectural and large companies with ahierarchical order. After Europeans began settling in America, millions of indigenous Americans died from epidemics of diseases brought from Europe, such as smallpox.
In 1492, Genoese explorer ChristopherColumbus, sponsored by the Spanish crown, reached several Caribbean islands, making first contact with the indigenous peoples. On April 2, 1513, Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León landed on whathe called La Florida, the first documented European arrival on U.S. soil. Spanish settlements in the region were followed by others in the southwestern United States today. French fur traders settledNew France around the Great Lakes area, and finally France reclaim much of the interior of the United States, to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The first successful English settlements were theVirginia Colony in Jamestown in 1607 and founded Plymouth Colony Pilgrims in 1620. In 1628, the establishment of the province of Massachusetts Bay resulted in a new wave of immigration: for 1634, NewEngland was inhabited by some 10,000 Puritans. Between the 1610s and the American Revolution, about 50,000 convicts were sent from the Old World to the colonias.18 Since 1614, the Dutch settled along thelower Hudson River, and founded New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island.
In 1674, the Dutch ceded their territory to England and the province of New Netherland was renamed New York. Many newimmigrants, especially in the south, were hired as servants, so that about two-thirds of all Virginia immigrants who arrived between 1630 and 1680 worked as sirvientes.19 the end of that century, African...
