Es una novela del escritor Alexandre Dumas, publicada inicialmente en folletines por el periódico Le Siècle, entre marzo y julio de 1844. En ese mismo año fue publicada como volumen por laeditorial Baudry y reeditada en 1846 por J. B. Fellens y L. P. Dufour con ilustraciones de Vivant Beaucé.
Esta obra está escrita en prosa, y el ejemplar está dividido en 20 capítulos, más el epílogo
Se emplea un castellano antiguo, muy elegante y poco usual en nuestro tiempo. Esto es a causa de la traducción y de la época en la que se desarrolla dicha historia.
El contexto predominante es elhistórico, ya que narra todas y cada una de las situaciones que tuvieron lugar al momento de la declaración de la guerra entre Inglaterra y Francia.
