Se fue un 31 de octubre, como quien sellaba para siempre el nacimiento de la música criolla con su propia muerte. Era 1973, y con solo 37 años de edad, 13 de artista y 3 de celebridad.
She passed away on October 31st, as if with her death she was sealing forever the birth of the criolla music. It was 1973 and she was only 37 years old.She had been artist for 13 years and a celebrity for 3.
Según los cronistas de entonces, ella pidió ser velada en el club “El Sentir de los Barrios”, en memoria de aquel programa radial homónimo donde debutó musicalmente con el vals “Abandonada”. Toda una declaración de principios.
According to the journalists of the time, she asked to have her wake at the club “El Sentir de los Barrios,”in memory of the radio program of the same name where she made her musical debut with the waltz “Abandonada”. A complete declaration of principles.
Desde que Lucila Justina Sarcines Reyes nació el 19 de julio de 1936, la realidad la limitó a usar su voz sólo para gritar o llorar. No exageran quienes recuerdan la dureza de su biografía: huérfana de padre a muy temprana edad, sobrevivió almaltrato de su padrastro y a un incendio en su segundo hogar del Callao.
Since her birth on July 19th, 1936, Lucila Justina Sarcines Reyes’s reality confined her voice to screaming or crying. They do not exaggerate those who remember her tough upbringing: orphaned at an early age, survived both her stepfather’s abuse and a house fire in her second home in El Callao.
Fue internada ocho años en elConvento del Buen Retiro junto a las monjas franciscanas, pero nunca dejó el trabajo infantil. Como alguna vez opinó el dramaturgo Eduardo Adrianzén, guionista de la miniserie sobre la diva, Regresa, LUCHA REYES tuvo todos los estigmas: ser mujer, pobre, negra y fea.
For eight years she lived among the Franciscan nuns of Buen Retiro Convent, but she never left child labor. As one day commentedthe playwright Eduardo Adrianzen, screenwriter of the TV miniseries about the diva titled Regresa, LUCHA REYES had all the stigmas: she was a woman, poor, black and ugly.
Tras esa primera presentación en Radio “El Sol”, su situación no cambió demasiado. Siguió lavando ropa y maltratando tanto su voz como su cuerpo, liberando al ave que encerraba en su garganta en reuniones amicales y jaranas decallejón. Toda su vida había maleducado su voz pregonando diarios y vendiendo loterías, para llevar algo de comer a su hogar de quince hermanos en la calle Aromito, hoy Jr. Yutay, en el Rímac.
After her first presentation in Radio “El Sol,” her circumstances did not change much. She kept laundering clothes and neglecting her voice as well as her body, freeing the bird inside her throat insocial gatherings and back alley parties. All her life she mistreated her voice hawking newspapers and lottery tickets, just to bring home something to eat for her 15 siblings who all lived in Aromito Street, today Yutay in El Rimac.
No era una morena atractiva, poco agraciada físicamente, con las piernas delgadas como unos palitos, resultaba insignificante con su metro cincuenta y cinco. Nadieentendía la admiración que despertaba en las mujeres y la pasión que desencadenaba en los hombres, hasta que su garganta reventaba en las peñas criollas y el nombre de LUCHA REYES, se convirtió en un mito, aún antes de su muerte.
She was not an attractive mulato woman, not blessed physically, with thin legs like sticks, she looked insignificant with her 1.55 meters in height. No one understoodthe admiration she received from women and the passion she triggered in men until her throat exploded in the peñas criollas and the name of LUCHA REYES, became a myth, even before her death.
