MAIN STREETS OF MEDELLIN

Junin Street
Junín was an important street in Medellin`s city center. Hundreds of people used to walk along this street windows-shopping or socializing in its many cafeterias and restaurants. Today this street has been closed to traffic, becoming a long pedestrian zone crossed by thousands of people daily. Its charm has not been lost, thought, and promenading alongthis street is referred to by the locals as ¨juniniar.¨
Up until 2004, the seat of Club Union, an elegant club grouping the wealthiest families in the city, was located on this street. Now, this location will be taken over by a shopping center. However, the Astor tea parlor is still open, gathering many guests who go there to have a chat.
In 1968, in the corner of Junín and La Playa (anotherimportant street of de city) the Coltejer building, the first skyscraper in Colombia, was built.

La Playa Avenue
La Playa Avenue has taken up an important role in the development of Medellin’s city center. The reason for this is that Santa Helena brook- a vital axis for the city dwellers, who used to take the water for their daily consumption from it- used to run along this area.
The firstmansions of wealthy citizens were built on La Playa.
Later on, apartment and offices buildings were erected in their place. Toward its eastern end we find “Pablo Tobon Uribe” Theater, a beautiful architectural jewel. On this western end, La Playa leads into Oriental Avenue, perhaps the most frequented avenue in the city center. Down below Oriental Avenue, towards the west, la Playa goes on with othernames: Primero de Mayo, Las Americas, De Greiff and Paseo de la Republica.

Oriental Avenue
Its construction at the beginning of the 1970s was the result of the project from the City Planning Department, which aimed at creating a new access to the center of Medellin, both from the south and from the north. At its was necessary to divert its course so that the avenue did not affect the oldrepublican houses in Prado neighborhood, one of the architecture jewels in the city center.

Colombia Street
Colombia street was on the roads that constituted the colonial urban layout, thought by that time it didn´t cross toward the western side of the river, by the second half of the 20 century, the Pilot Plan for Medellin promoted the urbanization of the western city, so that many roads,including Calle Colombia, were extended to that zone. Their current course begins in the hillsides of the Accede neighborhood; it crosses the city center going by the Parque Berrio (historical center), then crosses the river, passes through the Carlos E Restrepo residential neighborhood, then it passes by a side of the Sports Center Atanasio Girardot, then by the headquarters of the Fourth Brigade ofthe National Army, and finally it finishes its course near after crossing the 80 Avenue through a round point in the Calazans residential neighborhood, to the western city center with western Medellin.

Las Vegas Avenue
Las Vegas Avenue or Avenue de los Industriales, as its starting stretch is called, is defined by Medellin´s Plan for Territorial Ordering as a metropolitan road axis thatconnects the city with the eastern towns of the Valle de Aburra. Its course begins in the Regional Avenue, near the bridge of the 30 street over the river. From there, it goes by the old facilities of the cement plant Argus and the iron and steel factory Simesa, then goes to road crossing of the 10 street. From that point, its name change to Las Vegas Avenue, and passes through important educationinstitutions. Its course finishes in Sabaneta to the south of the Valle de Aburra, in a zone of bars and restaurants.
