RESUMEN
Se retoma una antigua discusión iniciada en los años 1976-1978 respecto a las características que
habría tenido la ocupación Tawantinsuyu en elvalle del Mapocho, las que varían desde una postura
etnohistórica que visualiza el área con serios vacíos estructurales con respecto a la organización
introducida, donde se percibe una dominación tenue, incompleta y tardía, hasta una visión más
arqueológica que reconoce la presencia en el Mapocho de la mayoría de las instituciones clásicas
incaicas y la existencia de un centro administrativoprincipal. Este debate continúa los años
siguientes, en términos bastante parecidos, pero se agrega a la discusión una referencia histórica
temprana de la existencia de un “tambo grande que está junto a la plaza de esta ciudad” donde el
problema radica en determinar si este edificio fue construido por contingentes incaicos o por los
españoles.
La presente investigación pretende, desde una miradainterdisciplinaria, sistematizar la
evidencia arqueológica, etnohistórica, histórica y de geografía sagrada e incorporar e integrar nueva
información, con el objetivo de enriquecer la discusión y poder responder de manera más
documentada a las interrogantes planteadas. Se concluye que habría existido un centro urbano
Tawantinsuyu, bajo el casco antiguo de la ciudad de Santiago, desde el cual salíancaminos incaicos
en distintas direcciones y cuya base de sustentación fue la hidroagricultura y la minería de oro y
plata. La infraestructura de esta instalación habría sido aprovechada por Pedro de Valdivia para
fundar la ciudad de Santiago.

ABSTRACT
An old discussion which started in the late 70 `s is retaken regarding theTawantinsuyu occupation
in the MapochoValley and the characteristics it may have had, which vary from an ethno historical
perspective that visualizes the area with serious structural voids regarding the introduced political
organization, thus a weak, incomplete and late domination, to a more archeological vision that
acknowledges the presence of the majority of the classic Inca institutions and theexistence of a
main administrative center. The debate continues, in very similar terms, but an early historical
reference to the existence of a “Big tambo which is next to the square of this city” is added to the
discussion, the problem lies in determining if this building was constructed by the Inca contingent
or the Spanish.
The current investigation aims to, from an interdisciplinary point of view,systematize the
archeological, ethno historical, historical and sacred geography evidence and incorporate new
information, with the objective of enriching the discussion and responding in a more documented
way to the questions mentioned earlier. It is concluded that an urban center of Tawantinsuyo may
have existed, under the old quarter of the city of Santiago, from which inca pathways came out indifferent directions and whose subsistence base was the hidro-agriculture and the gold and silver
mining. It`s believed that the infrastructure of this building would have been used by Pedro de
Valdivia to found the city of Santiago, in the beginning of 1540.

INTRODUCCIÓN
Transcurridos 35 años desde los trabajos de Stehberg(1976c) y Silva (1977-78), que plantearon
desde la perspectiva arqueológica y etnohistórica, respectivamente, las principales hipótesis que se
