As Puerto Rico seeks to lower soaring utility rates while simultaneously shifting toward cleaner energy sources, it faces grassroots opposition totwo major projects even though a least one is 100- percent rewable, the pipeline would start on the island’s south coast, head northwards through the central mountain range and theecologically delicate Karstic Zone and then east wards into the densely populated San Juan metropolitan. The “Via Verde” (the name that they gave to the pipe line) is to be built by the Spain-basedFenosa Corporation which bought Ecoelectrica from the controversial U.S –BASED Enron 2003, some people think that there are other ways to fix the problem for example, a transition can be made fromthermoelectric power to natural gas without building a tube across the island.
Economic point of view:
Positive:
Within the state's investment priority should be to have clean energyprojects, with which as we read that with the construction of wind energy fields can produce 75 megawatts reach capable of supplying more than 25000 households which we achieve a cleaner, greener energy source.
Negative:
If we put pipeline construction as the main source of energy in PR would continue depending on oil exporting countries.
However if we can developtechnologies which can supply us with our own wealth, as can be hydro, wind or solar.
Would be able to both lower the price of energy as to be independent as soon as the electrical issue.
Culturalperspective:
Positive: within the investment to be undertaken by the state in the pipeline included the transfer of technology with other countries.
Negative:
The pipeline is an energysource that is not 100% safe and environmentally friendly. And that we would use an oil to produce energy. These days the culture should be implementing renewable energy plants and organic.
