Differences between modern and postmodern art

The 20th century can be divided into two different movements: the modernism and the postmodernism. Although theywere on the same century, major differences, like the ways of thinking and the approaches towards life, can be found between both of these.

- Modernism was characterized by a dramatic change ofthought, whereby human intellect sought to improve their environment by involving science and technology into it. Modernism brought a reform in all spheres of life including philosophy, commerce, artand literature. It led to progress in all the aspects of life by changing the approach of mankind of looking at them.

Modern art embraces a wide variety of movements, theories, and attitudes whosemodernism resides particularly in a tendency to reject traditional, historical, or academic forms and conventions in an effort to create an art more in keeping with changed social, economic, andintellectual conditions.

- Postmodernism was a reaction to modernism and was influenced by the disenchantment brought about by the Second World War. Postmodernism refers to the state that lacks acentral hierarchy and one that is complex, ambiguous and diverse. The developments in society, the economy and the culture of the 1960s were impacted by postmodernism.

When it comes to postmodernism art,it’s less an issue of style and more a theoretical engagement with the ideological structures of norms, language, and institutions that give rise to the socio-political phenomena of class, gender,race, nationalism, and postcolonial capitalist expansion.
Postmodern art explores subjective, daily life by whatever criteria, material, or method the artist deems effective.
