Construction in Dubai
A.- Introduction.
Dubai is a city located in the United Arab Emirates; it is the capital of the emirate of Dubai. It is known as “The Venice of the Gulf” because being a city surrounded by desserts and salt deposits it’s divided in two parts by a river that forms a natural canal that comes from the sea.
Some years before, Dubai only depended on the pearlcommerce, very famous for its quality, the fishing activity and depended on the camel rearing. Then when oil was found in the town, it became their most important income, as well as with the production of natural gas. Today Dubai has created a lot of industrial parks in order to make the city an important place where research, technology and economy are principal issues.
They have createdimportant industries like “Dubiotech” dedicated to biotechnology research and development, “Techno Park” dedicated to the technological industry and manufacturing, “Dubai Silicon Oasis “ the purpose of which is to make semiconductors, cables and electronic devices and “Dubai Industrial City” that its principal concern is set on metals, mining, petro-chemical, pharmaceutics, etc.
Dubai hasadopted a policy of “free economic zones” which consists in collecting a light amount of tax or any tax at all. With that strategy Dubai, encourage development and promote companies to invest there, it also gives another advantages that have attracted some companies to invest there like the strategic location[1] that Dubai has, the accessibility [2]that the country has, its political and economicstability[3], etc.
These projects are not only being made by the Arab people, it’s a whole grouping of visionary people from different countries that can make this entire fantasy world possible. Many companies, investors and designers had put their effort and faith that with these projects. Dubai is not going to be known only for their oil, they will be recognized for being a cultural, economicand touristic centre. These mega-constructions have broken all the schemes of engineering and architecture, taking ideas that in other times would have been considered as impossible, today are being made concrete. Today Dubai has many buildings that are very unique and that have modernized the city, all this with big amounts of money that are giving very good profits to the bet that investors andcompanies had made on Dubai.
This city is just showing us a part of all the good things this city can give to the world, and we will be able to see all the achievements of this city if it keeps that solid political-financial-governmental structure that has today.
B. - Principal Projects.
The principal projects in which everybody has their eyes on are the following ones:
The BurjDubai.
The Burj Al Arab.
The Palm Islands.
The reason for investing in the construction of so many projects and developing them in a really quick way is because Dubai is concentrated to become a tourist’s spot and is expected that in 2010 the number of visitors and tourist reach the 10 million people in a year.
1. - Burj Dubai.
a. – Introduction
The Burj Dubai is aproject that is being built in Dubai. The project consists of being the biggest skyscraper in the world. The construction of this building began on September 21st of 2004, and it’s expected that the construction is finished by September of 2009 ready for its use.
The Burj Dubai is one of the most ambitious projects in construction in Dubai, that shows us that Dubai is the country with thebiggest economic resources that looks forward to creating successful, dynamic and prosperous projects that became the symbol and emblem of this wonderful country, such as the Eiffel tower in Paris, The Sydney Opera House or the Statue of Liberty in New York.
