After the Second World War in 1949 - the German Republic, which until then had it made by a single state, was divided in two. On the one hand it was West Germanyor West Germany and the other the German Democratic Republic or East Germany.
While the Democratic Republic was a Socialist, the Fed had a democratic government.
On the night of August 13,1961, soldiers from the Democratic Republic fortifications built soon became a concrete wall 47 kilometers long by 4 feet high surrounding the western part of Berlin, the German capital. The excuse forthe wall was the defense, but the reality was that claimed that the citizens of the Democratic Republic not escape the country.
During the nearly thirty years he was built, several people died tryingto escape and the wall became a symbol of the Cold War kept the United States and the former USSR.
In 1989, the fall of the socialist regime in Russia, tambi'n the Berlin Wall fell. The completeunification of the two Germanys was reached October 3, 1990.
The economy in the years of the Wall: The socialist regime nationalized all sources of production in the GDR. Its development was almostpurely agricultural.
The German Federal Republic, however, achieved a high level of industrial development and became one of the first world powers.
