1. - Read about the following questions and answer them. (Short answers no more than 3 lines).
What is science? Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. In an older and closelyrelated meaning science" refers to the body of reliable knowledge itself, of the type that can be logically and rationally explained.
What is the goal of science? The goal of science is to investigate and understand the natural world, to explain events in the natural world, and to use those explanations to make useful predictions.
ll.- Describe the steps of the scientific method.-Observation: Noticing objects or events using the five senses. The data collected by using the five senses to learn about objects and events.
-Hypothesis: A testable explanation for observations and questions about the physical universe.
-Experiment (control group, experimental group, dependent and independent variable): A test using observations and controlled variables to discover answers to questions,and/or to check a hypothesis.
-Results (qualitative data quantitative data):
* What is the difference between hypothesis and theory?: A hypothesis attempts to answer questions by putting forth a plausible explanation that has yet to be rigorously tested. A theory, on the other hand, has already undergone extensive testing by various scientists and is generally accepted as being an accurateexplanation of an observation. This doesn’t mean the theory is correct; only that current testing has not yet been able to disprove it, and the evidence as it is understood, appears to support it.
lll. - Read about the most common ways to publish the results from a scientific research and make a scheme.
lV .- Activity – think about a common problem and use the scientific method: make an hypothesisfor a possible explanation of the problem, do some (imaginary) tests and invent your results, after that you need to make a conclusion according to your hypothesis.
V.-Read about the following questions and answer them. (Short answers no more than 3 lines).
What is biology? Is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function,growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.
What is the difference between an eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell? The difference is the prescence (eukaryotic) or absence (prokaryotic) of membrane-bound organelles, like a nucleus.
Also, prokaryotes use peptidoglycan for their cell walls while eukaryotes use cellulose.
One more difference is that most prokaryotic genomes are circular,while eukaryotic genomes are linear.
What is a DNA? Is a nucleic acid containing the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms . The DNA segments carrying this genetic information are called genes.
Vl.- Relate the characteristic of the living things with the area of study of biology.
Ex. All living things are based on a universal genetic code.Characteristic | Area of biology |
All living things are based on a universal genetic code | Molecular Biology or Genetic engineering |
Are made up of units call cells | Cell biology |
Reproduce | Reproductive biology |
Grow up and develop | Development biology biological engineering |
Obtain and use materials and energy | Biological engineering |
Respond to the environment |Environment biology |
Maintain a stable internal environment | Biological homoestasis |
Change over the time | |
Vll. - Read about the metric measurement system, and draw a table with the units for the temperature, distance, mass and volume.
Vlll. - According to your last table make some conversions.
1 | 12 300 00 mg | -> | kg | 2.3 kg |
2 | 7800s | -> | h | 1666h |
3 | 3 000...
