Summary
“New World”


The events in this chapter are set in the city of Sarum, from 1533 to 1587. It narrates the political and economical events which took place during this period. Themain characters are: Thomas Forest, Edward Shockley, Captain Jack Wilson, Peter Mason, Abigail Mason, Piers Godfrey, Nellie Godfrey and Katherine Moody.
Sarum was suffering the effects of theReformation. The city would never have known the Reformation but for that all Queen´s Katherine children died in infancy except for one daughter, Mary. The king Henry VIII had one son, born out ofwedlock, but it what was needed was a legitimate heir. Therefore, Henry asked the pope to annul his marriage but, since he had no answer, Henry run out of patience and withdrew his kingdom from the Churchof Rome. The king made himself both the king and pope in one person. Henry´s church was Catholic in almost everything except acknowledging the authority of the pope. When brave men protested, they wereexecuted as well as all Henry´s queens who did not give him a son.
The city of Sarum had change in two important respects: the first was the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the second one wasthat every church must buy one of the newly printed English bibles. Late did the king decree that only nobles and gentry might read them aloud in their own homes; Edward Shockley had already readthis Bible and it changed his view towards religion. The problem was he fell in love with a Catholic girl, Katherine Mood, so in order to marry her he had to lie and hide his support toward theProtestant doctrine.
In 1547, King Henry VIII died and he was succeeded by his only son Edward VI. Edward was only a boy and he ruled under the guidance of protectors; but he was a Protestant and with himthe Reformation really came to Sarum.
