RESUMEN

No se había consolidado aún el poderío hispano en el Perú, cuando
surgió la primera universidad: San Marcos, creada por Real Cédula de 12 de
mayo de 1551, a dieciséis años de la fundación de Lima. LlamadaSan Mar-
cos desde 1574, es un caso singular en la historia de la educación; en Lima
de entonces y demás ciudades peruanas existían solo algunas escuelas ele-
mentales. Así, de un nivel de primeras letras se dio un salto a la educación
superior. La educación intermedia surgió después. En 1571 fue confirmada
por Breve del Papa Pío V. San Marcos aparece como una Universidad estatal
y pontificia, bajoel amparo de ambos poderes. Siguió el escolasticismo, en
ella imperó la enseñanza libresca, memorista y dogmática. Fue aristocrática
y elitista.

La Universidad de San Cristóbal de Huamanga (Ayacucho) fue funda-
da por el obispo del lugar en 1677, ratificada por real Cédula de 1680 y Breve
Papal de 1682. La Universidad de San Antonio Abad, en Cusco, nació con
Breve Papal y Real Cédula de 1692. LaUniversidad de San Ignacio, también
en Cusco (1621) se extinguió al ser expulsados los jesuitas (1767). Las carac-
terísticas de estas instituciones fueron semejantes a las de San Marcos. To-
das reprodujeron el modelo universitario hispano. Y nacieron vinculadas a
comunidades religiosas.

La Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, primera de la república, fue fun-
dada en plena campaña final de laemancipación, el año 1824, por Simón
Bolívar y José Faustino Sánchez Carrión. Con ella comienza el modelo uni-
versitario republicano. Le siguió la Universidad Nacional San Agustín de
Arequipa (1827); después apareció la San Carlos de Puno, de vida corta. La
Universidad Católica, la primera de carácter privado, fue creada en 1917.

THE ORIGEN OF THE OLDEST UNIVERITIES IN PERU

The first university: San Marcos emerged when the Spanish power in
Peru had not yet been consolidated. It was created by Royal Document of 12
may, 1551, sixteen years after the foundation of Lima. Thisuniversity, called
San Marcos since 1574, represents an exceptional case in the history of
education; because at that time there were only a few elementary schools in
Lima and the other cities of Peru. This means that a great leap was made
from the very elementary level up to higher education. Intermediate education
appeared afterwards. In 1571, San Marcos was confirmed by Brief of Pope
Pio V, as astate and pontifical university, under the protection of both powers.
This was followed by scholasticism, and with it, the bookish, memorizing
and dogmatic teaching prevailed. It was also aristocratic and elitist.
The University of San Cristobal de Huamanga (Ayacucho) was found by
the local bishop in 1677, ratified by Royal Document of 1680 and by Papal
Brief of 1682. The University of San AntonioAbad, in Cusco, emerged with
Papal Brief and Royal Document of 1682. The University of San Ignacio,
again in Cusco (1621) stopped duties when the Jesuitas were expelled (1767).
The characteristics of these institutions were similar to those of San Marcos.
All of them reproduced the Hispanic university model, and emerged linked
to religions communities.

The National University of Trujillo, thefirst one of the republic, was
founded at the turning point of the emancipation, in 1824, by Simon Bolivar
and José Faustino Sánchez Carrión. With it, the republic university model
begins. Then the National University of San Agustín of Arequipa (1827);
after this the University of San Carlos of Puno appeared, but had a short life.
