REFLECTIONS

In my experience as a high school English teacher, I learned a lot of positive aspects which will help me to improve my teaching methodoly, my personality as a professional person.The School was “ Institución Educativa Santa Teresa de Jesus” The grade where I did the practice was seventh. I taught in three groups, Seventh A, B and C. In general, all were large groups, more orless 38 students by group. So the discipline management was difficult. Their social strata was level 1 or sometimes 2, consequently, their good learning was affected by familiar problems and sometimestheir behavior aptitudes were not the best. Some of them had drugs problems, in general, there were a lot of negative aspects affected not only an excellent class development but also a good learningprocess.
Another general aspect called my attention was that in the school all secondary groups had 5 hours of English per week. For me, the intensity was good, talking about a public school, at thebeginning, when I saw that schedule I though students had a good level, but when I started the class I noticed their level was low. They did not understand what I as a teacher said, nor talked morethan four followed words in English. They just said “no entendemos ingles teacher”. So the challenge was big. However, I asked what was going bad? Maybe methodology their teacher was using was notthe adequate. Taking into account what I have learned at the university in methodology , what a good teacher should do in a classroom, I made a comparison to what this teacher did, and his methods werewrong. He did not talked in English, his pronunciation was not very good. He only used translation method and lists of descontextualized vocabulary Besides, I did not like his personality, he wasdisrespectful to me. And it made that my work there was stressed. I did not feel comfortable.
