The shooting at the Success Tech academy in Cleveland may seem to be just another incident in a long line of school shootings in recent decades, but the core of this problemruns deeper than simply some ‘troubled kid,’ disgruntled by teachers and classmates, lashing out at those around him. To attribute this act of violence to the deviance of one individual is anirresponsible and simplistic way of overlooking the powerful and overarching influences of a larger system. Given the increasing prevalence of school shootings in the United States, it is clear that they maybe considered a social problem. The problem lies in how this problem is defined which will lead to failed intervention tactics in attempting to solve it.
To understand the flaws in how these twomedia reports, among others, describe the school shooting one must understand how school shootings are defined as a problem in this country, and the implications that problem definitions have for societyas a whole. The approach taken by these two news clips attempts to explain this incident as the deviance of one individual without taking into account the countless other factors that set the entireincident into motion. There is no evidence of placing responsibility on the people outside of the individual level who could have made this tragedy completely avoidable.
Special note was made aboutthe actual, physical security in place at the entrance to the school in Cleveland. This is a shallow way of attempting to make sense of a deeply-embedded social problem. In the first video, titled“Cleveland School Shooting,” Coon entering the school is described as such, “ Security camera video may show how the teen got past an armed guard posted at the school’s front door. The school does nothave metal detectors.” By implicating security as a cause of this social problem the actual causes are overlooked, thus hampering efforts to solve it.
