Los trastornos del comportamiento alimentario constituyen en la actualidad un problema de salud pública. En los últimos años se ha incrementado su prevalencia, llegando a constituir la tercera enfermedad crónica más frecuente en mujeresadolescentes. Aunque se desconoce su etiología exacta, se acepta una hipótesis multifactorial, donde intervienen distintos factores biológicos, psicológicos y sociales. Las manifestaciones clínicas y sus complicaciones son muy graves, pudiendo conducir al paciente a la cronificación con incapacidad a corto y largo plazos, así como a la muerte prematura. El diagnóstico y tratamiento precoces sonesenciales, ya que mejoran considerablemente su pronóstico. El tratamiento, según el grado de afectación del paciente, será ambulatorio u hospitalario y debe llevarse a cabo por un equipo multidisciplinar coordinado. La realimentación, educación nutricional y recuperación del peso son importantes al inicio del tratamiento, además de abordar los diferentes problemas médicos y psiquiátricos. Laprevención mediante una adecuada educación para la salud es crucial, potenciando los factores protectores y contrarrestando los factores de riesgo, actuando tanto a nivel de la consulta, escuela, familia y sociedad. El pediatra o médico de atención primaria tiene una labor muy importante a realizar.

Prevention by means of a suitable health education is crucial, harnessing protective factors and diminishing risk factors, taking part at the level of clinical office, school, family and society.
