In 1272 Edward I of England in a proclamation banned the burning of coal inLondon, where air pollution in the city became a problem.
Air pollution remained a problem in England, especially with the advent of the industrial revolution. London also recorded one of the mostextreme cases of water contamination with sewage during the Great Stink of the River Thames in 1858, this led to the building shortly after the London sewer system. It was the industrial revolution thatstarted the pollution as an environmental problem. The emergence of great factories and consumption of immense quantities of coal and other fossil fuels increased air pollution and causing a largevolume of industrial chemical product spills to the environment, to which must be added the increase of untreated human waste.
In 1881, Chicago and Cincinnati were the first two American cities to enactlaws to ensure clean air. Other U.S. cities followed suit during the early twentieth century, when creating a small Air Pollution Department, under the Department of the Interior. Los Angeles andDonora (Pennsylvania) experienced large amounts of smog during the 1940s.
Pollution became a major issue after the Second World War, after the apparent hiciesen the impact of the fallout caused by warsand nuclear tests.
