A Look Into Brazil’s Makeover of Rio’sSlums

The reading is about Rio’s Slums call “favelas” and how the Brazilian government reduced the violence levels. Marcos Rodrigo Neves, who grew up in “Rocinha” thelargest favela in Rio do Janeiro, tell us about his own experience and the favelas cleaning up process. Now a day he has an art Institute calls Wark Roc-inha. This name came from the sing he uses to dohis Rocinha graffiti works. In the past Drug-trafficking gangs use to control the territory, and police rarely entered out for fear they could be attack. For decades, drug gangs call Comando Vermelhoand Amigos dos Amigos, operated a cocaine-distribution network. They would block off the entrances of territory, making it extremely dangerous for the police to enter to the favelas.In late 2008, thePresident da Silva Government decided to quite with such unfear and dangerous situation. It was created a pacification project to decrease levels of violent crime and improve Rio de Janeiro’s imagefor the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. State and federal governments send police units to the drug traffickers’ territory. 2009 government started to invade numbers of favelas. There werekilled dozens of gunmen, arrested major traffickers and set up permanent positions on the streets. 28 favelas in Rio have been pacified. Therefore, the government has targeted another three dozen.Inorder to improve the quality of life in the favela, the government has created programs that include a variety of public works, apartment projects bordered by parks and playgrounds, sports complex andpublic footbridge and also a cultural center and library. |
