1 Kinds of Sentences

A sentence is defined as a word or group of words that expresses a complete idea and that includes a subject and a verb. A sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation point (!). There are four types of sentences. Declarative Adeclarative sentence tells something. It ends with a period. Examples: Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004. Facebook is the world’s largest social network. It has over one billion monthly active users. Interrogative An interrogative sentence asks a question. An interrogative sentence ends with a question mark (?). The following are some of the words that are used to ask a question: who, what,where, when, what, why, how, do, does, did, is, are, was, were, will, can, etc. Examples: Do you read messages on Twitter? Who created Twitter? Will you buy the iPad?

Imperative An imperative sentence gives an order or makes a request. It ends with a period. When the sentence begins with a verb (find, save), the subject you is implied. Examples: (You) Find out when the concert starts. (You)Please find out how expensive it is. (You) Save all the information in a new folder in your computer. Exclamatory An exclamatory sentence shows strong feeling (happiness, anger, pity, surprise, wonder). It ends with an exclamation mark (!). Examples: It is very cold! Read the newspaper article! Oh my goodness! Exercise 1 Identify each sentence as declarative, interrogative, imperative, orexclamatory. Example: Are you going to the movies? 1. Ana G. Mendez was an educator. 2. Where was she born? 3. Please answer the phone. 4. The Internet provides travel information. 5. Listen to the sound of the waves. 6. I am so very happy! 7. Dubai is a very expensive city. 8.
