Introducción
Son infecciones que se pueden transmitir a través de las relaciones sexuales, también son conocidas como enfermedades de transmisión sexual (ETS). Antes les decíanenfermedades venéreas, son muy contagiosas. Pueden transmitirse por la vagina, por el ano o por el contacto de la boca con el pene o la vagina. Se contagian entre hombres y mujeres o entre personas del mismo sexo.
Algunas ITS pueden transmitirse mediante el contacto con sangre o algunos de sus derivados contaminados, como ocurre entre las personas que se drogan y comparten sus agujas. También puede pasarde la madre al niño durante el embarazo, nacimiento o mientras le da de lactar.
Se conocen más de 20 infecciones de transmisión sexual, que incluyen entre otras: la sífilis, gonorrea, hepatitis B y el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) que ocasiona el SIDA.
