1.What is Catalonia?


1. General View

Catalonia is a Spanish autonomous community considered historic nationality, located northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. Bordered on the north with France and Andorra, to the east by the Mediterranean Sea, south to Valencia and Aragon to the west.
This strategic location has favored an intense relationship with the territories of the Mediterraneanand continental Europe.
Its capital is the city of Barcelona.
In the Catalan region the currently population is 7,504,881.
It is an area very dense and highly industrialized, leading the industry sector in Spain in the nineteenth century and its economy is the most important of the regions, generating 20.8% of GDP

Culture

In Catalonia, speak several languages​​, Catalan and Spanish, thetwo are considered official languages ​​since 1979.
Catalan is considered the language of Catalonia, but usually the two languages ​​are spoken.
Anyway Spanish is the most spoken language in Catalonia
Catalonia is considered a nation already has its own anthem, flag and language.

Economy

Catalonia is an area of industrial tradition from the nineteenth century.
At present, industry,tourism and services are the main economic sectors in Catalonia.

1.2 Politics in Catalonia : Generalitat of Catalonia and Statute of autonomy1.2.1 Generalitat of Catalonia

The Generalitat of Catalonia is the institutional system of government in Catalonia, and includes institutions such as the Parliament of Catalonia, the President of the Generalitat and the Government of Catalonia.


The Parliament of Catalonia has its roots in the Assemblies of Peace and Truce of God in Catalonia in the XI century, which are considered the first,although premature, parliament in the world.


These Assemblies were the origin of the Catalan Courts, which in 1364 created the Generalitat to collect the taxes. Later on it was given more political power and eventually became the main Catalan power.


In September 1714 Catalonia is conquered by Spain and all its laws, constitutions and institutions are abolished.


In April 1931, afterwinning the Spanish municipal elections in Catalonia, Francesc Macià proclaims the Catalan Republic. The Spanish government, in transition to a Republic, negotiates and finally reincorporates Catalonia to Spain, but yields and allows the Generalitat to be restored.


In 1938 the Spanish dictator Franco abolishes the Generalitat, but it continues existing in exile.


In September 1977 theGeneralitat is restored.


Artur Mas i Gavarró is its 129th President.

1.2.1.1 Institutions of Generalitat of Catalonia

The Parliament

The Catalan Parliament represents the people of Catalonia. It exercises legislative power, approves the budget of the Generalitat and controls and promotes political and government action. Also exercises other powers conferred on it by law andparticularly by the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia.






The President of the Generalitat

The President of the Generalitat of Catalonia holds the highest representative of the Generalitat and the State's ordinary in Catalonia. Directs and coordinates the action of the Executive Council or Government. It is based in the Palace of the Generalitat de Catalunya in Barcelona.


The GovernmentThe Executive Council or Government of Catalonia is the superior collegiate body that directs the policy and the Administration of the Generalitat of Catalonia. It is also the holder of the executive and regulatory powers.
