Chapter 1 – Introduction

The Project management team is responsible for determining what is appropriate for anygiven project.
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service or result.
Temporary means that every project has a definite beginning and a definite end. Theduration of a project is finite.
The temporary nature of projects could apply also to the opportunity or market window or the project team.
A project creates unique deliverables.
Progressive elaborationis a characteristic of projects. Progressive elaboration means developing in steps and continuing by increments.

Organizations perform work to achieve a set of objectives.
Projects and operationalwork share the following characteristics:
- Performed by people
- Constrained by limited resources
- Planned, executed and controlled
Operations are ongoing and repetitive, while projects aretemporary and unique.
The purpose of a project is to attain its objective and then terminate. The objective of an ongoing operation is to sustain the business.
Projects are often utilized as a means ofachieving an organization’s strategic plan.
Projects are typically authorized as a result of:
- Market demand
- Organizational need
- Customer request
- Technological advance
- Legalrequirement

Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements.
The project manager is the person responsible foraccomplishing the project objectives.
Managing a project includes:
- Identifying requirements
- Establishing clear and achievable objectives
- Balancing the competing demands for quality, scope, time andcost.
- Adapting the specifications, plans and approach to the different concerns and expectations of the various stakeholders.
