1527 – Cabeza De Vaca left Spain on an expedition to occupy North America and gather riches.
1528 - Landed at what is today Tampa Bay, Florida. 600crew members died.
- survivors developed relationship with Apalachee tribe, but relationship did not last.
- Attempted voyage to Cuba on rafts failed and only 80 members survived when theywrecked on shore of what is now Galvaston,TX.
- Cabeza de Vaca traveled west; over an 8 year period covered over 2,500 miles – mostly on foot.

Point of view refers to the perspective fromwhich a story is told. It does not refer
to the feelings, opinions, or biases of the author. When an author writes in the first person, he or she adopts the voice of the main character. In fictionthe main character is not usually the author. A woman author, for example, could write a novel from the point of view of a little boy or a woman who lived in a different era.
In “La Relacion,” AlvarNunez Cabeza de Vaca writes in the first person about
his own experiences. In this selection, the first person voice is that of the author
himself.
Bias – syn. prejudice - a strong inclination ofthe mind or a preconceived opinion about something or someone. A bias may be favorable or unfavorable: bias in favor of or against an idea.
Writers often reveal bias in their writing.Sometimes they do so openly, by expressing ideas that clearly reveal their biases. Sometimes they do so in more subtle ways. Choosing what to include or exclude can reveal bias. So can the words a writeruses to express his or her ideas.
Like other explorers of his day, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was a professional soldier who joined a royal expedition on behalf of the king of Spain.
