It is one of the most wellkown disasters throught time, where more lives were lost than saved. Several books and movies has been made about this ship that sank on her maiden voyage foralmost 100 years ago.

((Titanic was almost able to make it several times, but it was just enought to make her sink..))

I’m going to talk about the Titanic today, I will tell you what actuallyhappened when it sank and why so many lives were lost.

Titanic was constructed by the White Star Line and it took three years to finish her. She set to sail on April 10th, 1912. When the passengersstarted to board, she was so new that the paint was still wet in some places. Titanic was a luxurious ship that had a heated swimming pool, libraries, a squash court and... It was at the time “the shipof dreams”.

In the aspects of entertainment and quality Titanic was flawless, however there was not enough lifeboats for all the passengers aboard.

The White Star Line had decided on taking 20lifeboats, each boat able to take 65 people, which was able to hold about half of the number of passengers aboard. Even though they had not enough lifeboats, they actually had 4 more boats than theBritish Board of Trade Regulations had decided. The reason why such low amount of lifeboats were allowed is, that at the time, the number of lifeboats required was determined by a ship’s gross registertonnage, and not the number of passenger.

The collision with the iceberg was unavoidable, but after some analysises had been made afterwards, they say that there might have been a chance that theTitanic had survived if it hit the iceberg straight forward, instead of turning.

But the harm was already done and the hull was buckled in several places. The seawater started to fill meanwhile thewatertight doors shut. If only four compartments had been filled with water, Titanic would have been able to stay afloat. But 5 compartments were filled, and the heavy water dragged the ship down in...
