Rocks
The Earth:
Earth looks like this inside, at least what geologists believes. Geologists are scientist who study rocks. They think the Earth is made up of three main layers: thecore, the mantle and the crust.

The crust: the crust contains the least dense rocks. It is much cooler than the rest of the Earth. ( 5-90 km)
The mantle: the mantle is cooler, around 1600ºC. The rocks in it are less dense than the rocks in the core. (3000 km)
The core: the core is mostly made of iron. It is very dense and hot with temperatures between 2000ºC and 5000ºC. The inner coreis solid. The outer core is red hot liquid rock. INNER(1215 km) OUTER (2255 km)
This section deals manly with the crust. It is not difficult to see why. For one thing, it is the part that youlive on. It also supplies many of the things you need for living, including: building materials, metals, fuels, ans soli for growing crops.
Recognising rocks:
The Earth’s crust contains hundredsof different rocks. Here are six wich are found in Britian.
GRANITE: is a very hard rock. It is not easily scratched. It sparkles in the sunshine because it has crystals in it. Some of theswcrystals are big enough to see.
SANDSTONE: is a softer rock. It is made up of grains of sand. You can easily rub the grains of the rock, even with your finger nail!
SLATE: has crystals and is hard, butnot as hard as granite. It is made up of layers which can be split off from each other. That is why pieces of slateare offten flat.
BASALT: it is very hard, difficult to scratch and is made up ofcrystals. But the crystals in basalt are tiny. Is similar to grainite.
CHALK: is another soft rock. White grains come off when you rub it. That is why it can be used fot writing on blackboards.MARBLE: is mostly white or grey, but may have steaks of colour. It contains small crystals. It is hard but can be scratched with a knife.
