Yankov’s Redemption:
His discoveries at the river
Sometimes in life is hard for people to appreciate what they have. It is not unless something tragic occurs that they can actually analyze and begin an inside battle with their selves wondering why they didn’t pay attention to the things that required it the most. A tragic event can have a deep influence in somebody’s personality and changethe way they used to look at things. This is what happens in the tale: Rothschild’s Fiddle. Yakov was always in the worst sense of humor. When he experienced the loss of his wife, he realized that he wasted 70 years of his life getting older but he never changed his consciousness. His personality took an unexpected turn and then he began to realize what the important things in life really are. Iwill use this essay to demonstrate that Anton Chekov’s tale takes a U-turn when Yakov experiences the loss of his wife combining this with his sudden approach to death. The symbols used in the throughout the story will help me demonstrate the transition from objective to subjective time combining this with the death of his baby daughter.
After losing Marfa, Yakov begins to analyze every singledetail about his life. In objective time he didn’t live as comfortable as he wanted to, because his job wasn’t the best one .He makes good coffins and he's proud of that. But he also hates. He hates Rothschild, the Jewish musician who plays flute in the band. He ill treats Rothschild for no apparent reason. He has a horrible sense of humor and by having this sense of humor he was hated byeveryone. All this anger mixed with struggle lead him to mistreat his wife and everyone around him. He was not appreciated of all the things he had instead, he complained all the time without having a reason. At the beginning of the tale this is very clear:” Yakov was never in a good temper, as he was continually having to put up with terrible losses. For instance, it was a sin to work on Sundays orSaints' days, and Monday was an unlucky day, so that in the course of the year there were some two hundred days on which, whether he liked it or not, he had to sit with his hands folded”. What Yankov didn’t know in objective time was that he so called terrible losses weren’t terrible losses at all. He starts to look back on his life when Marfa dies. The transition point in the tale is when Yakov goesto the river, this is where his thoughts become more philosophical, and he finds a deeper meaning for everything in life. Yakov suddenly realizes that life could have been different, better. His point of view changed completely in subjective time as Yakov realizes that life is a great gift .What he used to see as a negative thing now he sees as a positive. He imagines positive images like thegeese coming together or the river filled with boats. He didn’t use to appreciate all the beauty in nature because for him this was not important .The willow tree in the tale often used as a symbol of grief yet in the tale is very green represents that it is never too late to enjoy the little things in life; you can never be too old to start living. It gives him the impulse to change hisconsciousness. The crow in the nest represents the thin line between being death and alive. As he concentrates on the river’s flow he begins to think of all the things that he wanted to change about him, about all the things he missed by being so mad all the time but it also gives him hope, because the river keeps flowing it represents the chance to start over, to change his point of view and to make himselfa better person. The river opens the door for him to leave all that he was behind him and encourages him to begin a new journey (objective time to subjective time). The river is a positive symbol, he sees himself for what he is and, therefore, has an opportunity for personal redemption. That is why he refused to talk about his dead baby .The baby was in the past and represents negativity his...
