FABRICATION
2.5.1 General Fabrication of all steelwork shall conform to the requirements of AS 4100, AS3990 and all other relevant standards. The Contractor shall give at least one week’s notice of the time and place at which he proposes to commence fabrication of thestructural steelwork. All measurements shall be made by a steel tape related to a standard tape which has been certified correct. The tape and steel to be measured shall be at the same temperature and precautions shall be taken to tension the tape in accordance with the methods taken to calibrate the tape. The fabrication contractor shall run dimensional checks of all drawings and their revisionsprior to commencement of work. Where members including fabricated conveyor galleries are required to be cambered, the amount will be specified on the Drawings and the means of achieving the correct amount of camber shall be agreed with the Superintendent prior to fabrication of the member concerned. The Contractor may propose alternative joint details to suit his plant and manufacturing method. These will be considered by the Superintendent and, if found suitable, approved. In such an event, the cost of revision and/or redrafting of the drawings shall be borne by the Contractor. Additional splices to members (other than those shown on the Drawings) shall generally not be allowed. However, to expedite fabrication, the Superintendent may permit additional shop welded splices in members at theContractor’s expense, provided approval is obtained before such splices are made. Approval of the splices is conditional upon non-destructive testing using either radiography, ultrasonic, magnetic particle and/or dye penetrant tests of the welds, as ordered by the Superintendent, and at the Contractor’s expense. If extra splices are made in exposed members, all butt welds shall be ground flushafter fabrication and care shall be taken to ensure that completed members are neat and trim. Suitable jigs and supports shall be used to accurately fabricate steelwork to the dimensions shown on the Drawings. The Contractor shall plan welding sequences and adjust them where necessary to control distortion and achieve dimensional accuracy. Before welding any joint, the edge preparation and fit-upmay be checked by the Superintendent or his nominated representative and adjustments shall be made, if necessary, before tack welding.
Methods for correcting distortion or damage shall be approved in writing by the Superintendent. All members shall be fabricated true to shape and size, without distortion complete with all necessary temporary brackets, straps, gussets, cleats, fixings and the likenecessary for erection and assembly of the steelwork. 2.5.2 Cutting and Holing
All structural steel components shall be neatly and accurately machine flame cut, sheared or sawn in accordance with AS 3990, to the profile shown on the Drawings. Flame cutting by free-hand will not be permitted without the prior approval of the Superintendent. Exposed flame cut surfaces shall have a Class 2 finishas defined in WTIA Technical Note 5. Structural steel hollow sections shall be profiled to fit the shape of the members to which they are to be welded.
