Simple Past FORM

USE 1 Completed Action in the Past

Use the Simple Past to express the idea that an action started and finished at a specific time in the past. Sometimes, the speaker may not actually mention the specific time, but they do have one specific time in mind.
Use of Simple Past
action in the past taking place once, never or several times
Example:He visited his parents every weekend.
actions in the past taking place one after the other
Example: He came in, took off his coat and sat down.
action in the past taking place in the middle of another action
Example: When I was having breakfast, the phone suddenly rang.
if sentences type II (If I talked, …)
Example: If I had a lot of money, I would share it with you.

USE 1 Interrupted Action in the Past

Use the Past Continuous to indicate that a longer action in the past was interrupted. The interruption is usually a shorter action in the Simple Past. Remember this can be a real interruption or just an interruption in time.
Use of Past Progressive
puts emphasis on the course of an action in the pastExample: He was playing football.
two actions happening at the same time (in the past)
Example: While she was preparing dinner, he was washing the dishes.
action going on at a certain time in the past
Example: When I was having breakfast, the phone suddenly rang.

USE 1 Completed Action Before Something in the Past

The PastPerfect expresses the idea that something occurred before another action in the past. It can also show that something happened before a specific time in the past.

En Ibarra se dice de dos grandes amigos, Manuel y Carlos, a los cuales cierto día se les fueencomendado, por don Martín (papa de Carlos), un encargo el cual consistía en que llegasen hasta cierto potrero, sacasen agua de la asequia, y regasen la sementería de papas de la familia, la cual estaba a punto de echarse a perder. Ya en la noche, muy noche, se les podía encontrar a los dos caminando entre los oscuros callejones, donde a medida que avanzaban, se escuchaba cada vez másintensamente el escalofriante "tararán-tararán". Con los nervios de punta, decidieron ocultarse tras la pared de una casa abandonada, desde donde vivieron una escena que cambiaría sus vidas para siempre... 

Unos cuerpos flotantes encapuchados, con velas largas apagadas, cruzaron el lugar llevando una carroza montada por un ser temible de curvos cuernos, afilados dientes de lobo, y unos ojos de serpienteque inquietaban hasta el alma del más valiente.
