Free Soilers
Abstract
The Free Soil Party evolved in the1840’s in response to the growing split between pro- and anti- slavery movements in the United States. In 1848, the Free Soil Party prohibits slavery in new U.S territories acquired in the Mexican War.It was a third party and in the election of 1848, The Free Soilers made a promising showing Martin Van Buren as theirs presidential candidate. Eleven Free Soilers also won congressional seats, butthe party wasn’t strong enough. Free Soilers made a big impact on, Whigs and Democrats, and made the expansion of slavery a national political Issue. When the Free Soil Party disappeared in 1845 to jointhe Republican Party, members allied with a party whose platform supported their commitment to prohibit the extension of slavery.
