Definition 1:
There are several similar definitions accepted forsoftware, but probably the more formal the following:
The set of computer programs, procedures, rules, documentation and related data that are part of the operations of a computer system.Excerpted from the standard 729 of IEEE5
Given this definition, the concept of software goes beyond computer programs in its different states: source code, binary or executable, but alsodocumentation, data processing and user information even part of the software: that is, includes all the intangible, all "non-physical" related.
The term "software" was first used in this sense byJohn W. Tukey in 1957. In software engineering and computer science, software is all information processed by computer systems: programs and data.
The concept of reading different sequencesof instructions (program) from the memory of a device to control computations was introduced by Charles Babbage as part of his difference engine. The theory that forms the basis of mostmodern software was first proposed by Alan Turing in his 1936 essay, "The computable numbers", with an application to the decision problem.
Definition 2:
It is known as logical software toequipment or software of a computer system includes all necessary software components that enable specific tasks, as opposed to the physical components, which are called hardware.
The logicalcomponents include, among others, computer applications, such as word processor, which allows the user to perform all tasks related to text editing, the system software, such as operatingsystem, which basically allows the rest of the programs to function properly, also facilitating the interaction between hardware components and other applications, and providing a user interface.
