HANDOUT: Macbeth
* Context
Macbeth is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare in 1606 and was published in 1623. This is the shortest tragedy Shakespeare`s tragedy that takes place inScotland; the play is about the life of a historical character, Macbeth, the king of Scotland between 1040 and 1057.
* Characters Map
Macbeth: is the protagonist of this tragedy, he is a great warriorand is the later king of Scotland.
Lady Macbeth: Macbeth’s wife, a deeply ambitious woman who lusts for power and position.
Duncan: is the king of Scotland
The three witches: they are the agentsof fate, who plot mischief against Macbeth using charms, spells, and prophecies. Their predictions prompt him to murder Duncan, to order the deaths of Banquo and his son.
Banquo: The brave, noblegeneral whose children, according to the witches’ prophecy, will inherit the Scottish throne. He is a warrior and is a Macbeth´s friend.
Macduff: he is the Thane of Fife and is a Scottish noblemanhostile to Macbeth’s kingship from the start. He eventually becomes a leader of the crusade to unseat Macbeth.
Malcom: he son of Duncan, whose restoration to the throne signals Scotland’s return to orderfollowing Macbeth’s reign of terror.
Hecate: He helps the witches to do the mischief.
Fleance: Banquo’s son, who survives Macbeth’s attempt to murder him. At the end of the play, Fleance’swhereabouts are unknown.
Lennox, Ross, Mentieth, Angus y Caithness: they are a Scottish noblemans.
Lady Macduff: is the wife of Macduff. The scene in her castle provides our only glimpse of a domestic realmother than that of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. 
Donalbain: Duncan’s son and Malcolm’s younger brother.
