Act 2 Scene 1 is the scene before Macbeth murders Duncan, and where he is waiting for the signal to commit the murder.These predictions push Macbeth to murderDuncan, Banquo and eventually they kill him. They predict for Macbeth to become Thane of Glamis, this is his current title. However their next prediction is a little more ambitious. They predictMacbeth will become the Thane of Cawdor, when to Macbeth is knowledge, the Thane of Cawdor still lives. The third prediction seems impossible – Macbeth will become King of Scotland. Each of thesepredictions comes true.
Visions and hallucinations recur throughout the play and serve as reminders of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth is joint culpability. When he is about to kill Duncan, Macbeth sees a daggerfloating in the air. Covered with blood and pointed toward the king is chamber, the dagger represents the bloody course on which Macbeth is about to embark.
Later, he sees Banquo is ghost sitting ina chair at a feast, pricking his conscience by mutely reminding him that he murdered his former friend. The seemingly hardheaded Lady Macbeth also eventually gives way to visions, as she sleepwalksand believes that her hands are stained with blood that cannot be washed away by any amount of water.
The first key scene, involving the supernatural, without the influence of the witches occurs inAct 3 Scene 4. This is the scene where the ghost of Banquo returns to haunt Macbeth at Macbeth is Dinner Party. When he sees the ghost he reacts with horror and upsets the guests. However, onlyMacbeth can see the ghost and this leads onto the debate about whether the ghost is merely Macbeth is guilty conscience catching up with him, or whether the ghost appears to Macbeth and hides itself fromeveryone else in the room. Macbeth is obviously terrified by the ghost.
