Tone: is the writer’s or poet’s attitude toward the subject (of the poem or story), toward his/her audience, and towards him/herself. Thereader gets a special feeling from the tone of the poem. It can be of happiness, of sorrow, of anger, etc.
Irony: is an incongruency between two things. For example, it can be between what is saidand what is meant.
1. Define the following terms (in the chapter, “Listening to a Voice”)
Verbal irony: The use of words to convey something other than the literal meaning of the words.Dramatic irony: When the audience knows something the character doesn't.
Ironic Point of View: The difference between what the reader thinks or believes and what the author thinks or believes.
Irony ofsituation:is a discrepancy between the expected result and actual results.
Irony of Fate: when the audience expects something to happen, and the story takes a different direction because of fateor gods' intervention.
What is ironic in the poem, “The Man He Killed?
The fact that the speaker wouldn't have killed the man if he'd met him anywhere else but at war.
Explain the verbalirony found in the poem, “War is Kind.”
The speaker is saying that war is kind and mentioning examples of the pain people face in war. He is being sarcastic because he really means that war ishorrible because it turns men against each other and provides more grief than the world needs.
