The Maximato
Antecedents
* First, The Mexican Revolution (1910 to 1921), the consequences disastrous for the world-wide economy of the 1929 crisis, and the effects of the Cristera War(1926-1929). This period is enrolled then, in a while of great social and political agitation. The same period it would have to begin with magnicidio.
* Although the Mexican Constitutionprohibited the re-election of the president of the republic, the Magna Carta reformed so that Alvaro Obregón outside chosen to hold this position, after it to have occupied from 1920 to 1924.
*Beginning with the 1928 election, the presidential term was increased from four to six years (sexenio). Thereafter, the sexenio formed the basis for regular and orderly political succession.
* Obregónwon the election but was assassinated by a religious fanatic before taking office on July 17, 1928.
What is the Maximato?
* The Maximato is the period in Mexican history between 1928 and1935, in which the former President Plutarco Elías Calles maintained control of the country as Jefe Máximo, with many regarding succeeding Presidents Emilio Portes Gil, Pascual Ortiz Rubio, andAbelardo Rodríguez as his mere puppets.
Description:
* Seeking to ensure political stability, Calles opted not to violate the "no-reelection" principle and instead chose one of his supporters,Emilio Portes Gil, as interim president (December 1928 to February 1930) until new elections could be held.
* By 1929 Calles' found the National Revolutionary Party (Partido NacionalRevolucionario--PNR). Unlike previous parties, the PNR was designed to be a permanent organization run exclusively by Calles as jefe máximo. Henceforth, the "official" party served as the dominant politicalorganization in the country and the primary dispenser of official patronage.
