THE GREAT CHINA WALL
It is an ancient Chinese fortification built and rebuilt between the V century a. C. and the sixteenth century to protect the northern border of the Chinese empire during the successive imperial dynasties of the attacks of the nomadic Xiongnu of Mongolia and Manchuria.
Counting its ramifications and secondary buildings, is estimated to be 8851.8 km long, from the Koreanborder at the Yalu River border to the Gobi desert along an arc that roughly delineates the southern edge of Inner Mongolia, but to this day retains only 30% of it. on average, measured from 6 to 7 feet high and 4 to 5 meters wide. Ming At its peak, was guarded by more than a million guarders.
The wall was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. Much of the Great Wall is reputed to be thelargest cemetery in the world. Approximately 10 million people died during the construction. are not buried in the wall itself but in its vicinity.
On July 7, 2007 became known that the Great Wall of China was selected as a winner in the list of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It is twinned with the Roman walls of Lugo, Galicia, Spain, also a world heritage site.
The construction of theGreat Wall of China was ordered by Emperor Qin Dynasty the same name, to defend his kingdom against marauding nomadic tribes, and continued through successive Chinese dynasties. The part of the wall that remains today was part of the Silk Road and was built during the Ming Dynasty. It extends for about 6350 miles.
Over the centuries, armies were quartered along the wall to warn about an invasion assoon as possible and provide a first line of defense. Contrary to what may be believed, his purpose was not so much to prevent entry into China from northern nomadic tribes and the Manchu, but to prevent stolen property and escape from China.
After the formation of the Qing Dynasty, the wall had no functional use, as the country was then ruled by the same people we wanted to keep out theconstruction the wall. PETRA (JORDAN)
Is an important archaeological site in Jordan, and the ancient capital of the Nabataea Kingdom. The name comes from the Greek Petra πέτρα whichmeans stone, and his name is perfectly appropriate, it is not a city built of stone, but literally, carved and sculpted in stone.
The settlement of Petra is located in a narrow valley, east of the Arava Valley which stretches from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. The most famous ruins of Petra are definitely its buildings carved into the rock of the valley (hemispeos), in particular, thebuildings known as the Khazneh (Treasury) and Deir (the Monastery).
Founded in antiquity to the late seventh century C. by the Edomites, was occupied in the sixth century C. by the Nabataea’s who made it prosper thanks to its location on the caravan route carrying incense, spices and other luxury goods between Egypt, Syria, Arabia and the southern Mediterranean.
By the eighth century, changingtrade routes and suffered earthquakes, led to the abandonment of the city by its inhabitants. Fell into oblivion in the modern era, and the site was rediscovered in the Western world by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.
Many buildings whose facades are directly carved into the rock, forming a unique monument that from December 6, 1985, is inscribed on the List of World Heritage ofUNESCO. The area surrounding the place is also, since 1993, National Archaeological Park.
Since July 7, 2007, Petra is part of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
