The Woman In Black

Author Susan Hill puts us in Crythin Gifford a town on the east of England together with a young solicitor Athur Kipps who attens the funeral of Mrs. Alice Drablow, a widow who lived in Eel MarshHouse . The house was situated in a Marsh. At high tide the house was cut off the mainland.
Kipps discovers certain mistery around Mrs. Drablow, at her funeral he sees a woman dressed in black, palewasted face and dark eyes. Who watches in silence, surrounded by a group of children.
After the appearance of the woman in black, Kipps is found looking over the Drablow’s papers at Eel Marsh house,when a series of unexplainable sounds invaded the place. The sound was that of a pony, trapped in difficulties, fallowed by the screams of a young child and his maid.
The people in Crythin Giffordrefused to give information on the Drablow´s and the mistereous woman in black, because according to local tales, seeing the Woman in Black meant that the death of a child would follow.
Among theDrablow’s papers Kipps finds that Mrs. Drablow had a sister, Jennet Humfrye, who ended pregnant without being married and who had been forced to give the child to her sister. The boy thus became adoptep by theDrablow’s, who called him Nathaniel. Insisting on keeping the adoption a secret.

Jennet went away for a year; however, after realising she could not be parted for long from her son, she made anagreement to stay at Eel Marsh House with him. There was an agreement that she would never reveal the truth to him. One day, the pony and trap carrying the boy across the causeway became lost and sankinto the marshes, killing all aboard. This was particularly distressing for Jennet Humfrye as she had planned to run away with her son, as they were becoming very close. Jennet died later, but returnedto haunt Eel Marsh House and Crythin Gifford
