1. VERB TO BE
The structures with the verb to be are used to communicate different aspects such as talk about a person (your name, nationality, where is your profession, how you feel, etc...) And describe the characteristics of someone or something.
The verb to be have different forms that are used depending of the personal pronoun:Personal pronoun verb to be present verb to be past
I am was
You are were
He is was
She is was
It is was
We are were
You are were
They are were
Examples:
* Affirmative:
Present Past
I am astudent. I was a student.
You are in the cinema. You were in the cinema.
* Negative:
Present Past
He isn´t at home now. He wasn´t at home.
Her name isn´t Maria. Her name wasn´t Maria.
* Question:
Present Past
Is It a dog ? Was It a dog ?
Are We fall in love? Were We fall in love?
* Answer:
Yes, it is a dog/ Yes, it was a dog/
No it isn´t a dog.No it wasn´t a dog.
Yes, we are fall I love/ Yes, we were fall I love/
No, we aren´t fall I love. No, we weren´t fall I love.
2. SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
Is use to express a normal activity in present, something that you do every day, the structure is:
Subject + auxiliary (do/does) + verb (simple form) + complement
UXILIARIES: Do – general
Does – 3rd person
In this tenseare three important exceptions:
1.- For positive sentences, we don´t use the auxiliary.
2.- For the 3rd person (he, she, it), we add s (play-plays) to the main verb . or es to the auxiliary (does).
3.- For the verb to be, we do not use an auxiliary, even for questions and .negatives (don´t is, the correct form: isn´t).
Examples:
* Affirmative:
You cook in the kitchen.
She plays soccer very well.
* Negative:
He doesn´t do it well.
We aren´t musicians.
* Question: Answer:
Do you think that this is correct? Yes, I think it./ No, I don´t think it.
Does he play soccer? Yes, he `plays it./ No, he don´t play it.
3. SIMPLEPAST
The simple past tense is sometimes called the preterit tense. We can use several tenses to talk about the past, but the simple past tense is the one we use most often. Is used to express a situation in past that don´t have relation with the present.
UXILIARIES: Did – all personal pronoun.
The structure for the simple past is:
Positive:
Subject + verb in past + complementNegative:
Subject + auxiliary (didn´t)+ verb in present + complement.
Examples:
* Affirmative:
You studied for the test.
He was a good person.
* Negative:
She didn´t learn English.
You weren´t in London.
* Question: Answer:
Did you use it? Yes, I used it. / No, I didn´t use it.
Did she go out yesterday? Yes, she went out. / No, she didn´t go out.
4. PRESENT PERFECT:This tense is a connection with the past and with the present. Is used to express a situation in past but with a consequence in present. There are basically three uses for the present perfect tense:
1. experience
2. change
3. continuing situation
The estructure for the present perfect is:
Subject + auxiliary (has/ have) + verb (past participle) + complement.
UXILIARIES: have –general
has – 3rd person
Examples:
* Affirmative:
You have played very well.
He has put it in order.
* Negative:
She hasn´t seen you.
You haven´t finished the homework.
* Question: Answer:
Have you written a letter? Yes, I have written a letter. / No, I haven´t written a letter.
Has she eaten a hamburger? Yes, she has eaten / No, she hasn´t eaten...
