RESUMEN

Con este trabajo se propone descifrar la problemática del chulla a partir de la
doble identidad. Con el personaje Alfonso Romero y Flores, surgen los
conflictos, tensiones y frustraciones internas debido a su condición

de ser

mestizo en una sociedad llena de discriminación. Icaza describe de manera
cruda el rostro de la realidad nacional y una imagenverídica del medio quiteño
con gente despojada de humanismo.

A través de tres capítulos, se analizan tres aspectos relevantes que giran en
torno al tema de la identidad: en primer lugar, se realiza un sondeo psicológico
del Chulla, cuyos intereses étnico-sociales inciden tanto que prefiere no
reconocerlos y vivir de la apariencia, presumiendo un falso orgullo. Es un ser
oportunista bajo el disfrazque delata la falsedad de la apariencia. En segundo
lugar, se aborda el tema del enmascaramiento para llegar a la individualización
del protagonista. Finalmente, en el tercer capítulo se descifra lo peyorativo en
los personajes de la obra y la perspectiva de deshumanización. Esta situación
conlleva a desentrañar una suerte de separatismo social y cultural que emerge
desde distintos ángulos,unas veces desde el Poder establecido y otras desde
la iglesia y la sociedad en un ámbito urbano-marginal.

ABSTRACT

This work is to decipher the problem of chulla from the dual identity. With the
character Alfonso Romero y Flores,conflicts arise, internal tensions, due to its
being mixed race in a society full of discrimination. Icaza describes in a crude
way the face of the national reality and a true picture of the environment with
people from Quito stripped of humanism.

Through three chapters, discusses three important aspects that revolve around
the theme of identity: first, are scanning Chulla psychological, ethnic andsocial
interests which influence both who prefers not to recognize and live
appearance, assuming a false pride. He is a opportunist under the guise that
reveals the falsity of appearances. Secondly, it addresses the issue of masking
to get to the individualization of the protagonist. Finally, the third chapter is
decoded as a pejorative in the characters of the play and the prospect ofdehumanization. This situation tends to unravel a kind of social and cultural
separatism that emerge from different angles, sometimes from the power set
and some from the church and society in an urban-marginal.
