How did Napoleon take the position of First Consul and what arguments did he use for seizing power?
Sieyesproposed that Napoleon could have the role of a figurehead in the new Constitution. Napoleon refused this idea and argued that he must be the first consul as head of the state with complete control onpeace and war, at home and abroad. Napoleon explained that his reasons for seizing power were to make a Republic loved by its citizens, respected abroad and feared by enemies and that the newConstitution was based upon true principles of representative government and the rights of property, equality and liberty.
