Truth
“Truth” has a great variety of definitions, but it commonly refers to “the character of being, or disposition to be, true or steadfast in allegiance” (1). It is also established that it isbeing in accord with a particular fact or reality (3). In archaic usage it mean be fidelity, constancy or sincerity in action, character, and utterance (3)
Truth is generally accepted by having threecharacteristics: it is public because the truth is true for everybody. Francis Bacon wrote “The inquiry of truth, which is the lovemaking (...); the knowledge of truth, which is the praise of it; andthe belief of it, which is the enjoying of it, is sovereign good of all human natures”. Truth is also independent, independent for anyone’s beliefs. Finally truth is eternal; a true statement is true,was true and will always be true (2).
Philosophers have debated “what is truth?” and have developed a multitude of theories to answer it. These theories are divided into three groups. The Pragmatictheory of truth comes from the Pragmatic School of philosophy. This theory mainly says that truth depends upon experience. The coherence theory of truth, promulgated by the Idealist School ofphilosophy, sustains that a “proposition is true if it is consistent with other established truths which are commonly accepted as truth, that is, it coheres with them”. truth is primarily a property of wholesystems of propositions, and can be attributed to individual propositions only according to their coherence with the whole. Rationalist philosophers, such as Spinoza, Leibniz, and Hegel believe in thecoherence theory
The correspondence theory of truth promulgated by the Realist School of philosophers sates that the proposition is true if it matches or correspond to the fact (2). This is atraditional idea which goes back to some of the classical Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
